Update 0.1.0

Hi and welcome to what is hopefully the first of many dev posts for my new game, Rise. Unlike my other currently in development game, Stelestial Contact: Solar Storm. Rise is set in the fantasy world of Esden and you take on the role of an unnamed character as they struggle to rise through the ranks and find a place in a world that does everything it can to stop them.

With this being the very first version you can expect to see a lot of in progress work with many of the planned core features still missing. Despite this though you should at least be able to get an idea of the kind of game Rise is going to be and how I’m planning on developing it further in the future.

Having said that as this is the first version and there aren't really any changes when compared to a previous version for me to talk about I’ll just quickly go over the current gameplay loop and what it’s currently possible to do in game. For starters player movement around the map can be achieved by using either the WASD or arrow keys, advancing time as you do so. Alternatively you can left click on a valid map location with the mouse to have the player character automatically move there.

In addition to moving around the map there are also a number of objects to interact with, these being the bed, the well and a selection of dropped items. Clicking on any of these with the mouse while the player character is next to them or pressing the enter key will allow you to interact with them as defined by their object type. In practice this means you can sleep in the bed, drink water from the well (to recover your thirst meter) and pick up items from the ground.

Beyond moving around and interacting with the map there are also a number of GUI’s available on the left side of the window where you can see your character information, browse and/or use items from your inventory and equip or unequip items to give you an edge in battle. Speaking of which, there is also a transition point in the southern part of the map leading to a new map simply called the Forest. In the Forest there are not only different items to collect but also an enemy for you to fight in the form of slimes.

Running into one of the aforementioned slimes will trigger a turn based battle. Should you manage to win the battle then the slime you encountered before will be removed from the map and in a future version, will also result in you gaining experience points and possibly some dropped items.

As a final note I should also mention there is the beginnings of a save system which should allow you to save and reload the game at any point around either of the two maps. I have no doubt this system will change a lot in the future and so I can’t guarantee that saves will continue to be compatible going forward but I will at the very least try and make them work between different versions.

With that out of the way I think I’ll end this devlog here. You should now at least have an idea of what’s contained in this first version. For more insight into where the game is heading and what I’m planning to implement then I suggest you read through the games page if you haven’t already done so.

For now though I should probably get back to work on my other games porting efforts. Unlike the update schedule with that game I can’t say when or how often Rise will be updated as Stelestial Contact: Solar Storm is currently my main focus, a fact that will likely be true for some time yet. As such rather than saying I’ll be back in a months time like I normally do, I’ll instead say I’ll be back sometime in the future with the 0.2.0 update and if you find yourself curious as to what I’m working on then be sure to take a look at the Itch.io page for Stelestial Contact: Solar Storm.

Thank you in advance for anyone who decides to take a look at Rise or possibly even downloads it. If after doing so you have feedback, changes or ideas you’d like to see implemented in a future version then don’t hesitate to let me know.
